Homework is done and Sra. Malisa's house too!
One of the first assignments to all students, to the dismay of many parents, was to go home and "tag" 20 household items with the Spanish word on a Post-it (or paper and tape). Although slightly messy, this exercise helps to keep español on the brain. It also helps to engage the family in the language learning process. Many parents already speak Spanish to varying degrees. How wonderful to be able to practice together! Some parents speak absolutely no Spanish at all, and this is also WONDERFUL! Why? Because you parents can become the student! Everything your children learn, they can bring home and teach to you. This is one of the proven best ways to learn anything: to teach it! Your novice level will not intimidate your students, and you will be able to laugh together at pronunciation errors, or invent new ways to help each other remember words (like fork= tenedor. Pronounced "Ten adore." To help you remember you can think, one fork I like, but TEN I ADORE! tenedor.)
My husband, fresh out of ESL classes, is also wanting to learn Spanish. It is the perfect time to learn, since I am already speaking Spanish with our 0ne and half year old. So students, everything I assign to you, I have also assigned to my husband!!
Some more labels we put around our house:
Every time the object is seen, the Spanish word is read. Have fun!
